SAN DANIELE DEL FRIULI
The name San Daniele del Friuli first appeared sometime after the year 1000 when the castle was built. The fortified walls were erected a little later and parts of it (including the Portonat designed by Andrea Palladio) and one of the towers, still remain. During the Renaissance, the town thrived as a cultural center and some buildings and churches date from this period, namely the Church of St Anthony, which features a series of frescoes from the 16th Century, the masterwork of Pellegrino da San Daniele. A building worth mentioning is the Concina which currently houses the Museum of the Territory and features a painting by Pordenone depicting the Trinity - this was previously housed in the Cathedral and has now been replaced by a copy done by Dominico Fabris. The Cathedral, which overlooks the beautiful main square, has a clear stone facade adorned with statues by Domenico Rossi. Work on the bell tower, which is unfinished, was started in 1531 following a design by Giovanni da Udine. Also on the square is the Palazzo del Monte di Pietą, a work by the Venetian, Matteo Lucchesi which faces the Town Hall and is now the home of the Guarneriana Library (built with the proceeds donated by the humanist Guarniero Artega). It is one of the oldest libraries in Friuli and preserves many valuable incunables and illumimated manuscripts.
