VENZONE
Venzone is the only existing testament of a fortified town from the 13th Century left in Friuli. The town was proclaimed a national monument in 1965, destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 and then rebuilt stone by stone. The original walls had 16 square towers, retracable wooden ladders connected by a parapet built around a moat filled with water from the Venzonassa torrent. The first settlement was built around the Duomo in the Carolingian era. The earliest document in which Venzone is mentioned dates from 1001: the Emperor Otto III granted the erbatico of the Canal del Ferro to the patriarch of Aquileia. This was a concession of tremendous value in a time when the plains of Friuli were covered with swamps and very low grass. In 1258 Glizoio of Mels began constructing fortifications raising the walls by 8ft. After many events, in 1420 the city became part of the Republic of Venice and began its heyday. Not to be missed is the mysterious Cappella di San Michele which houses the famous mummies. The history of these mummies dates back to 1647, the year that the 'hunchback' mummy was first disovered.
